The Idije Ayo Olopon of the Iwude Ijesa Festival took place at the Ilesa Civic Center, opposite Obokungbusi Hall, on Thursday, 19th December, 2019.
The competition is sponsored by the Loofosan Oluwaseun Falomo's family and the coordinators headed by Chief Ayo Agbede (Lorunyin of Ilesa) also included Mr. Akin Ajayi-Obe and Prince Isaac Haastrup.
It will be noted that some of the African culture are gradually going into extinction and a game like Ayo Olopon has been replaced with Chess game despite the fact that both games requires the application of intellect and calculations, hence, this competition is a way of reviving the precious culture of Africa, most especially, the Yoruba traditional culture.
While speaking with the coordinator of the competition, Chief Ayo Agbede, he made it known that Ayo Olopon is very popular with Ijesa people as many joints still exist where players recreate and socialize after working hours, mostly in the evenings, thus, confirming it's wide acceptance and recognition.
The 2019 Iwude Ijesa edition season Ayo Olopon competition has come and gone, but history has been made as the event witnessed an unprecedented turnout of spectators.
The competition which comprised of 21 participants across various part of Ijesa land, kicked off at about 11:00am and it witnessed the presence traditional leaders/chiefs and public office holders, women leaders, Ijesa from the diaspora, cultural troops, musicians and entertainers among others.
Expressing joy over the success of the Ayo game, the vice Chairman, Chief Afolabi Igbaroola attributed success of the program to God's grace and proper planning.
Mr Jonathan Idowu emerged winner of the competition, Mr Aluwaye Ezekiel came second, while Mr Kanmi Fapohunda went home with the third prize
In attendance were planning committee members Including Professor Rotimi Tayo, Mr Wale Idowu, Mr Akin Ajayi-Obe, barrister Dupe Ajayi-Gbadebo, Barrister Dosu Babatunde, Prince Isaac Haastrup, Mrs Yemisi Ariyibi, Mrs Victoria Oluwaseun, Mr Oladimeji Lasore and Mrs Oluwabunmi Ogunniyi.
