The 2021 edition of the Iwude Ijesa inter-Schools Debate was held at the Assembly Hall of the Ilesa Grammar School premises on 15th of December. The aim of the competition was to inculcate self confidence and public speaking skills into the students and teach them to be articulate while expressing their opinions and thoughts.
The debate competition was held with the topic, "Education and Not Industrialization is Key to the Economic Development of Ijesaland" with the active participation of 5 schools drawn from all the local government areas of Ijesaland. Obokun High School from Ilesa East, Ibodi Grammar School, Ibodi from Atakumosa West, Esaoke Grammar School, from Obokun, Iperindo Grammar School from Atakumosa East and African Church Grammar School from Ilesa West. Each school was represented by two students.
All the participants were well prepared in presenting their opinions as they spoke logically in a coherent manner. The debators from Obokun High School, Esaoke Grammar School and Ibodi Grammar School spoke for the motion while those from Iperindo Grammar School and African Church Grammar School, Ilesa spoke against. Their eloquent speeches won much applause from the audience.
The panel of judges drawn from Ilesa Grammar School, Methodist High School, Ipetu-Ijesa Grammar School, Atakumosa High School, Babalola Memorial Grammar School and St. Margaret's Girls Secondary School were highly distinguished persons.
The highlight of the event was the presense of the Elerinmo of Erinmo-Ijesa, Oba Michael Odunayo Ajayi, Arowotawaya II, who was the Royal Father of the occasion. He spoke on the importance of acquiring self confidence as he advised against cramming. "Loading of information into short-term memory in a time like this has proven to increase stress levels and can lead to panic and anxiety." He said.
Also speaking in his remarks, Prof. Rotimi Tayo a member of Iwude Ijesa Planning Committee and the Chairman of the Education Sub-committee who came up with the topic for discussion exposed that he carefully chose the topic bearing in mind that Education and industrialization are both important to development of Ijesaland but which is "key" that is the most important?
The Vice Chairman of the Planning Committee, Chief Afolabi Igbaroola in his remarks while appreciating the students, made it clear that the aim of the program is to create awareness about the annual Iwude Ijesa festival in students all over Ijesaland.
At the end of the keenly contested competition, the African Church Grammar School, Ilesa came first, Esaoke Grammar School came second while the third position went to Obokun High School, Ilesa. The Royal Father of the day, Oba Michael Odunayo Ajayi, Arowotawaya II, also gave out prizes to some of the participants for their composure and display of self confidence in the presentation of their arguments.
