On March 25th 2017 there was a retreat of prominent ijesa Leaders (old and young) at the Resident of Rtd Justice Olu Ayoola in Ibadan. Chief Akinwande Akinola and Justice Ayoola jointly chaired the Retreat. Oba Jacob Adetayo Haastrup served as Secretary. The main resolution of the well attended retreat was the call for “formation of a platform to bring all development focused organizations and individuals in Ijesaland together for the sole purpose of economic and social development of the kingdom. Several small groups discussions and meetings followed, and the ijesa Development Assembly IDA, was established and inaugurated on the 10th of October 2019 at the occasion of the 80th birthday of Chief AKINOLA - Sawe@80. The 24 members Strategic and Advocacy Committee SAC of the IDA started work immediately on mobilization for the formation of ijesa Development Council.
The IDA and SAC.
In 2020, the advent of Covid-19 pandemic “tested” the SAC-IDA work. While it distrusted the planned mobilization for IDC formation, it was a good test of the concept of a unifying model for tackling development challenge. The SAC did the following:
1. Mobilization of ijesa Covid Relief Fund - which started on April 1 and until Sept 2, 2020. A total of 131 people contributed. Total contribution of about N13million was realized.
2. Palliative Distribution - between May and June 2020, ijesa Covid Relief Fund palliative of N5,000 per person was distribute to 1457 beneficiaries in the 12 LGA/LCDA in Ijesaland. About N7.3million was spent on palliative and N700,000 on the logistics, materials and publicity.
3. Community Campaign and Distribution of Face Masks by Ijesa Youth Devolpment Forum, IYDF. N74,000 was spent on Jingles, N600,000 on face masks and N630,000 for Distribution logistics and Campaign by IYDF. IYDF distributed about 5000 face masks and campaigned in a large number of communities in all the 6 LGAs between August 24 and Sept 5 2020. Further Distribution of 5000 face masks purchased at N600,000, was done through Clubs and Societies in Ijesaland. The then Provost of the College of Education Ilesa, Prof Kolawole Kazeem, assisted in the Distribution at no cost to SAC.
The SAC of IDA also participated in several development dialogue including the OWA palace project, the Conversion of the College of Education to a University and the issue of Mining. The SAC also established Committee on Private University in Ijesaland led by Prof. Abimbola.
Formation of IDC
