Oyebanji Explains Why Ekiti returned mission schools to owners

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has said that the state government’s decision to return mission schools to their original owners was based on the need for positive rebirth in learning and character in the schools.

Oyebanji, who thanked the Methodist Church Nigeria in Ekiti State for its contributions to the development of the state especially in the education sector, urged the church “to continue to use her vast influence to promote peace, unity and cooperation among our people”.

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Habibat Adubiaro, spoke in Ado Ekiti during the inauguration of the Diocese of Ado-Ekiti and installation of Rt. Revd Jeremiah Shittu as bishop of the diocese. The event witnessed the presentation of Sir Olajide Borode as Lay President.

Oyebanji hailed Shittu’s elevation, as he advised churches never to allow bigots and divisive elements to have a place on the pulpit.

He stated, “The state government recently returned some missionary schools that were taken over between 1974 and 1975 to the original mission owners. I am glad Methodist Church is one of such churches which have got their schools back. We are confident that with the return of the schools to their original owners, a positive rebirth in learning and character will materialise.”

Shittu, who harped on the need for peace during and after the elections, urged politicians to “allow peace because this is our country, we don’t have another”. He asked the electorate to vote their conscience.

The Methodist Prelate, Dr Oliver Aba, who cautioned against violence over the present state of things in the country, said, “What we are experiencing now is temporary. In the fullness of time, everything will normalise because God is in charge of this country called Nigeria.”
