With other improved welfare allowances for staff and corps members’ uniforms, the government will spend N14 billion annually on the scheme, he disclosed.

He said: “The final document and the final approval have been waiting for us to increase and improve the quality of the uniforms of our corps members by increasing the amount of money almost double, to increase the bicycle allowance, their feeding allowance, compensation to the staff.

“All of that has been done and has gone to the relevant ministry and finance and I am sure that as it makes its way to the presidency, it will get a positive response that will see an injection of fourteen billionaire (N14b) into the corps and sub welfare for the NYSC.

He underscored the need for those entrusted with responsibilities not to neglect the youths.

“We also need internal reforms because we deal with a very sensitive population. Since the EndSARS happened, no segment of this country can ever or should ever ignore the youths of our country…

“The youths of this country deserve investment in skills but also those of us entrusted with taking care of them must be sensitive to their needs and also to the issues that are affecting them today,” he added.

In his remarks, the NYSC Director General,

Brig. Gen. Mohammed said as part of its brainstorming session, lectures will be presented various issues, including a critical evaluation of the NYSC as an intervention national development in the last 50 years, NYSC as a veritable platform for the remodeling of the Nigerian youth for national development, and combating threats to NYSC operations for optimal contribution to national development as well as deepening skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development programme of NYSC as a panacea for skill mismatch and youth employment.

The DG also noted that, although the scheme has achieved a lot, stakeholders should meet up with their responsibilities to the scheme, so that the they can do more.

“Despite its laudable achievements, the scheme is still faced with some operational challenges. They arise mainly from the failure of some critical stakeholders to discharge their statutory responsibilities and the inability to empower a large number of Corps members with start-up capital for self-reliance after going through entrepreneurial trainings.

“We are battling with problems such as dilapidated facilities in the orientation camps, inadequate Corps lodges, lack of befitting office accommodation in some states, and inadequate vehicles, amongst others,” Mohammed said.
