U-17 AFCON: Golden Eaglets eliminated by Burkina Faso, fail to qualify for World Cup

Nigeria’s hope of playing at the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, was dashed on Thursday after the Golden Eaglets were knocked out of the 2023 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria.

The Coach Nduka Ugbade-led Golden Eaglets lost 1-2 to their Burkina Faso counterparts in a quarterfinal match at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Thursday.

Abubakar Abdullahi’s 67th minute goal, was not enough to see the Golden Eaglets through to the Semi-finals of the tournament after Burkina Faso’s forward Camara scored in the first half and grabbed a brace from the penalty spot 12 minutes into the second half.

Burkina Faso, will be among the four nations to hoist Africa’s flag at the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup, alongside Morocco, Mali and Senegal.

The 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup will be the 19th edition of the biennial international men's youth football tournament contested by the under-17 national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It will be held from 10 November to 2 December 2023.

Peru were announced as the 2021 U-17 World Cup hosts following a FIFA Council meeting on 24 October 2019 in Shanghai, China.

After the 2021 edition was cancelled, Peru was awarded the hosting rights of the next edition in 2023.

However, after extensive discussions between the Peruvian Football Federation and FIFA on the hosting suitability of Peru caused by its infrastructural defects, Peru withdrew as hosts on 3 April 2023, with FIFA announcing an immediate opening of a replacement hosting rights tender
