Osun state government under the administration of His Excellency Senator Ademola Adeleke is moving to extort at least ten thousand Naira (N10,000) from each of Osun SS3 students preparing to write the 2024 West Africa School Certificate Examination (WASCE) according to a letter addressed to President of Osun chapter of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) directed to inform all the Principals of Public Secondary Schools in Osun State, KAKAKIOODUA can confirm.
Whereas, the approved fee by West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) for the exam is N27,000 only for all candidates, irrespective of subjects;
Osun state government has directed Science students to pay N37,000 and Commercial/Arts students to pay N33,000.
The analysis of the Osun extra charges on all the candidates is as follows:
Chemistry Practical N1500
Physics Practical. N1250
Agricultural Practical N750
Biology. N1000
Trade subject. N1000
Offline -Online. N1500
Food Nutrition. N1000
Administrative charges N2000
It is noteworthy that most state governments in Nigeria do pay the exam fee for all students in public schools. Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State recently approved the disbursement of N497 million for the payment of the WAEC examination fees for students enrolled in the state’s public schools in the state. Even Osun State government, in the past, had paid the WAEC fees for students in government schools.
The funniest of the extra charges is that of the school administration. Why should registering Osun SS3 candidates for WAEC be considered as a special administrative assignment? What are the school principals and teachers paid for?
At a time like this, one would think that improving the state’s educational system should be the major concern of Ademola Adeleke's administration, by approving a disbursement for the payment of the 2024 WAEC examination fees for students enrolled in the state’s public schools, at least to cushion the effects of the removal of petrol subsidy .
The Yoruba wise saying "Orisa bi o gbemi, fimi sile bi o se bami" The god that can not aid one, should leave one the way it found one. If Osun State government can no longer pay the fees for students in public schools in the state, what will be the justification for the additional charge/levy of N10,000 per candidate by the state government?
If the Osun state government wants to generate funds from students in public schools, why should such be tied to the WAEC examination?
What has Adeleke administration being doing towards furnishing Osun public schools laboratories with necessary equipment and reagents. Why should Adeleke's government levy final year students for science practicals?
KAKAKIOODUA is of the opinion that no Osun SS3 WAEC candidate should pay more than N27,000 for the May/June 2024 West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination.
