At the concept of inter-school debating, the focus is on the school and not the students representing the school. Thus, when the performance of the student is unimpressive, it is a reflection of the teacher. (Vice versa). Consequently, teachers are to be blamed for the prevailing unimpressive academic performance of students.
These were the remarks of Prof. Rotimi Tayo, member of University of Ilesa Governing Board and the Chairman of the Iwude Ijesa Planning subcommittee's on Education, (literary and debating).
Prof. Tayo spoke at the event of the 2023 INTER SCHOOL DEBATE heralding the Iwude Ijesa Festival celebration, organized on Wednesday 20 December at Ilesa Grammar School Hall (Old School), that had Oba Augustine Adenipekun Alowolodu, the Elere of Ere-Ijesa as Royal Father of the occasion that featured selected schools that cut across Ijesaland.
The debate had as its motion "Community development association more than individual, promote youth empowerment" and featured Adeyemi Deborah and Ajayi Olatunbosun from Osu Community Grammar School, Osu, Atakumosa West local government, Lawal Suliyat and Oladiran Bisola of United Anglican Grammar School, Ilesa, Ilesa East local government, Olaosebikan Olanike and Oluborode Miracle of Osowusi Commercial High School, Iloko-Ijesa, Oriade local government.and Olanipekun Wasiu of Oba Agunlejika High School, Ilesa, Ilesa West local government as the debaters thrilled the panel of judges and the audience with their points.
At the end of the debate, United Anglican Grammar School Ilesa came first with 67%, Osu Community Grammar School Osu, came second with 59% and Oba Agunlejika High School Ilesa came third with 55%.
