June 12: A Symbol of Hope and Resilience in Nigeria's Democratic Journey - Adewopo writes Nigerians

Fellow Nigerians,

Today, as we celebrate 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governments, let us reflect on the incredible journey we have embarked upon since May 29, 1999. These past two and a half decades have been filled with progress, challenges, and moments that have shaped our nation's future.

First and foremost, let us remember the contributions of all our past Presidents daring this democratic era. Each of them has played a role in steering the ship of our nation towards stability and progress. Their dedication and efforts have paved the way for us to experience the benefits of a democratic society.

Today, we have a special reason to acknowledge the remarkable contributions of Late Chief M.K.O. Abiola. His struggle for democracy during the June 12, 1993, elections challenged the oppressive military rule and brought hope to millions of Nigerians. Sadly, Chief Abiola paid the ultimate price for his unwavering commitment to our nation's democratic ideals.  The June 12 struggle, tragically, led to Chief Abiola's eventual death in prison during the military rule. His sacrifice epitomizes the spirit of selflessness and bravery in our quest for a democratic Nigeria. His memory and the ideals he stood for should always remind us of the need to protect and nurture our hard-fought democratic values. We owe it to his memory to continue to uphold the values he represented and to work tirelessly for a better Nigeria.

On this momentous occasion, let us not forget the sacrifices made by so many other individuals who fought for our democracy and our nation's advancement. It is up to each one of us to honour their memories by actively participating in the democratic process and working towards a Nigeria we can all be proud of.

As we navigate through this pivotal period of our nation's history, we find ourselves facing a global economic crunch and other challenges. However, we must remain calm and united in the face of adversity. We are fortunate to have a leader like President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the helm of our nation. His experience, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria's progress give us hope for a brighter future.

Let us rally behind President Tinubu as he steers our nation through this challenging period. Together, we can overcome any obstacle and emerge stronger as a nation. Let us continue to sow the seeds of unity, peace, and progress, so that future generations can reap the rewards of our efforts.

As we celebrate our democratic achievements, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. We must remain vigilant and actively participate in the democratic process to ensure that our leaders remain accountable, transparent, and responsive to the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people. It is not enough to have uninterrupted democratic governments; we must continuously strive for good governance, social equity, and economic prosperity.

United in our diversity, let us uphold the ideals of democracy and work together to build a better Nigeria for ourselves and future generations. May our democratic journey continue to be a beacon of hope, a testament to our collective strength, and the cornerstone of a prosperous nation.

Happy 25th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic governments, dear Nigerians! Let us march forward with optimism, determination, and unity.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
