The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alerted the people of the state about the hydra headed monstrous posture of the state Security Network Agency popularly known as 'Amotekun Corps' which Governor Ademola Adeleke has strangely turned into his oppressive, vindictive and victimization instrument against his political opponents under its new leadership, Field Commander Adekunle Omoyele (CSP rtd).
The Osun State chairman of the APC, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, in a statement issued by the party's Director of Media and Information, Chief Kola Olabisi, today, observed that the Osun Amotekun has sharply deviated from the purpose for which it was established by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola now Minister of Marine and Blue Economy in 2020.
The state APC chairman recalled that the original purpose for the creation of the non-political Amotekun Corps under ex-Governor Oyetola was for its operatives to assist the police, other security agencies and traditional rulers in combating terrorism, banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping and also help in settling herdsmen and farmers' contentions in the state.
Lawal observed that surprisingly, the Omoyele-led Amotekun Corps has been turned into an assault arm of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which Governor Adeleke and his cronies have an unfettered access and liberty to use against political opponents for no just cause.
He recalled the unpalatable incident of last week where the Amotekun Corps in company with political thugs masquerading as asset recovery team badged into the Asubiaro, Osogbo residence of the pioneer and former Field Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Commander Amitolu Shittu, when members of his household were subjected to a traumatic experience as the building was searched without warrant and in the absence of Shittu with the subsequent carting away of a vehicle from the place.
He stated that the news of the invasion of another auto-mechanic workshop in Osogbo, Mr Babatunde Oyetunji, during the week by the goons led by ASP Omoyele (rtd) where the shop was equally searched without any warrant and spare parts and three vehicles worth millions of naira were subsequently carted away in the absence of the owner of the shop was an indication that an hydra headed monster used as a political vendetta by Governor Adeleke has surreptitiously crept into the state.
According to Lawal: "If the rumour making the rounds is anything to go by, that the state government has set a machinery in motion to go after some of the members of the opposition under the guise of an asset recovery, the so-called committee is taking steps capable of qualifying it and the state government as defendants of contempt of court proceedings.
"It all started when news filtered into the public to the effect that the Osun State Government had concluded a sinister plan to humiliate certain individuals from the camp of the immediate past government led by Alhaji Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola by storming their houses and forcefully retrieving vehicles from them.
"It was allegedly claimed then that these individuals went away with the government vehicles when leaving their various offices. This allegation was denied in its entirety by the affected people who maintained that no any property of the government was in their custody.
"The trend took another dimension when the people began to receive sms messages from the Asset Recovery Committee threatening to storm their houses for the vehicles.
"Being law-abiding, the people dragged the government to Court in Suit No. Hos/27/2024 Between: Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye & 4 Ors v. Governor of Osun State & 2 Ors on 29th April, 2024.
"Not only that the government and its Asset Recovery Committee are aware of the pending suit, they have entered appearance and filed their Defence to the suit on 24th June, 2024. The government equally filed its Reply to the Interlocutory Application for necessary injunctions filed by the Applicants in the suit and all are still pending.
"The matter came up about two times before the court went on vacation on 8th July, 2024.
"At the last session which came up on 3rd July, 2024, Mr. Bewaji Adeniji Esq., Chief State Counsel from the Ministry of Justice, appeared for the government and the Asset Recovery Committee while Ms Nafeesah O. Adetunji Esq., from the Law Firm of Adeoye Galadima & Associates appeared for the Applicants. The matter was thereafter adjourned to 10th October, 2024 for hearing.
"Meanwhile, it is taken as a mere rumour, effort of the officials of the government through its Asset Recovery Committee to go ahead and determine issues already submitted for court determination in the suit by invading the Applicants' houses for purported recovery of anything.
"It is important to call the attention of the Osun State government to the fact that promotion and adherence to the Rule of Law is the utmost importance of government in case political duties have obscured its views in that regard.
"Such an antecedent among many others of snubbing the Court and the Rule of law has prompted the need to hurriedly render this advice to the Osun State government that the law is in place to take care of all grievances or perceived wrongs but never by fiats of any individual. In addition, whenever matter is pending in the court of law, parties are to maintain status quo.
"The planned and ongoing harassment, terrors, humiliation and embarrassing situations to which some targeted individuals from the cabinet of the immediate past government are being subjected on a routine basis are not only uncalled for but appalling and very much disappointing especially when such is coming from an institution saddled with a duty to promote peace, rule of law and harmony.
"It is on this note that we are pleading as a party that caution is seriously advised so that the state will not be plunged into avoidable crises. On our own part, we vow not to be tired of towing the part of the rule of law and promotion of peace for which the party is long known for.
"We don't have any other state we can call our own unlike Omoyele who will not bid anyone good bye before he relocates to Oyo State where he hails from", Lawal cautioned.
