Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy Hosts Deep Seabed Activities Workshop (Details)

In a significant step towards advancing Nigeria’s Blue Economy, the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, in partnership with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), is set to host a major international workshop focused on deep seabed activities. This high-profile event will take place in Abuja from September 17-18, 2024.

The Honorable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, emphasized that the workshop represents a crucial opportunity for Nigeria to build in-country expertise and promote sustainable management of deep-sea resources. “This workshop will offer hands-on training for Nigerian researchers and stakeholders, allowing them to engage directly with international experts and advanced technologies,” Oyetola said. “With Nigeria’s recent extension of its continental shelf, it is imperative that we harness our vast ocean resources in a way that balances economic growth with environmental protection.”

The workshop aims to equip policymakers and industry professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage deep-sea resources effectively. It will feature a series of presentations on critical topics related to the Blue Economy and the potential of Nigeria’s deep seabed resources.

Among the highlights of the event will be a presentation by Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, titled “An Overview of the Deep Seabed: Prospects for the Blue Economy.” Another key presentation will be delivered by Surveyor Adamu Adaji, Director General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), who will discuss “An Overview of the Extended Nigerian Continental Shelf Claim.”

The deep seabed, which lies beyond national jurisdiction, covers more than 54 percent of the world’s oceans and is considered the common heritage of humanity. It holds promise as a future source of mineral resources essential for supporting a growing global population and addressing challenges related to land-based deposits. Moreover, the deep seabed plays a critical role in mitigating climate change by absorbing significant amounts of CO2 produced by human activities, thus helping to counteract the greenhouse effect.

The workshop will also provide a platform for collaboration between Nigerian maritime professionals and the Federal Government, aimed at harnessing ocean resources to create jobs and wealth for the nation. The event is expected to foster discussions on how Nigeria can leverage its deep-sea resources to drive sustainable economic development while preserving environmental integrity.
