The flag off of the insurance package came just as the NHIA pledges that through its robust and very comprehensive Benefit Package, NHIA-GIFSHIP will meet the healthcare expectations of the 2000 registered beneficiaries of the ICDA.
Speaking during the flag off of the insurance scheme on Friday in Ilesa, the Director General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Kelechi Ohiri who was represented by Mr Boore Emmanuel of the NHIA Southwest zone who said the move was in keeping with the determination of the federal government to expand the health insurance coverage to accommodate all Nigerians.
Kelechi said that "the auspicious occasion of the flag-off of the Ijesha Health Insurance Scheme is indeed a great honour to me. I understand that the enrolment of Ijesha senior citizens into the NHIA-GIFSHIP is sponsored by the Ijesha Community Development Assembly (ICDA). This is indeed a great feat.
"When I received communication some time ago about this initiative by the ICDA, I thought Nigerians were yet again moving in the right direction. When you give access to health to someone, you give him access to a healthy life. When we live a healthy life, we are more productive. When we are productive, our economy grows, and we become a prosperous nation. The relationship between health and a prosperous nation cannot be overemphasized."
While explaining the uniqueness of the Ijesa Elderly Insurance package to the audience that included traditional rulers, sponsors af ljesa Health Insurance Scheme, ljesa sons and daughters who represented various interest groups, Clubs, Societies and Organizations across ljesaland and beneficiaries selected across the 6 Ijesaland local government areas the Chairman ICDA and Ijesa Health Insurance Management team, Asiwa.ju Yinka Fasuyi, the Asiwaju of ljesaland who delved into the vision of the ICDA said; " In Nigeria the current Life Expectancy id 56 years compared to develop countries like Japan, UK, USA, and China where average Life Expectancy is 85 years, 79 years and 77 years respectfully. What explains this significant and depressing gap is the access to an effective healthcare system, which is vital to longevity, especially as individuals age.
"ICDA believes that in Ijesaland we can equal the life expectancy in Japan, UK, USA and China, if not even surpass it and that is why ICDA partners with the National Health Authority (NHIA) to provide health insurance for Ijesa elders, with prayers and hope that with access to good medical care, an average Ijesa woman or man will live by another 44 years above the National Average Life Expectancy of 56 years and attain a minimum of 100 years in Ijesaland."
Asiwaju Yinka Fasuyi further said the Ijesa Health Insurance Scheme cannot be for all ages due to limited resources. "It is for this reason that the ICDA has focused on the most vulnerable group in the society which are the Elderlies; the older one becomes, the greater health challenge one has. Therefore, ICDA has embarked on capturing and enrolling Elderlies from 60 years and above."
The highpoints of the flag off ceremony were the presentation of 30 million Naira cheques being the insurance premium of 2000 beneficiaries for the first year and the presentation of NHIA registration cards to the beneficiaries.
