The Owaship Structure of Ilesa has undergone significant transformations over the years. Prior to 1957, the selection process for the Owa of Ilesa was chaotic, with various familial claimants vying for the throne. However, after the death of Ajimoko II in 1956, the Western Restoration of the Throne of Bilaro with Heritage and Truth:
*Fajemisin Family Narrative*.
authorities established a more structured and predictable system in 1957.
This new system has shaped the selection process for the Owa of Ilesa. Today, the Owa is selected from one of four rotational ruling houses: Biladu, Bilagbayo, Bilayi Arere, and Bilaro. The recently passed Owa, Aromolaran II, was from the Bilayi Arere Ruling House, which means the next Owa will be selected from the Bilaro Ruling House.
The Bilaro Ruling House comprises two main lineages: the Liyinta Adejuyigbe Lineage and the Owa Ofukutu Lineage.
Within each lineage, there are several prominent families, these include; Aluko, Fajemisin, Fareo, Farotide, Ogunremi, Ojuola, Olushesi, Otuyegbe etc. Whilst the Ofokutu Lineage includes; Adebusuyi, Adegbohungbe, Adewale, Adeyemi, Adeyokunnu, Ajumobi, Akerele, Arimoro, Haastrup, Obembe and Oshundahunsi etc. These lists are in no way exhaustive.
The founder and dynastic leader of the [Fajemisin Family] of the Liyinta Adejuyigbe Lineage of the Bilaro Ruling House: is Peter Fariogun Fajemsin (circa 1850 — 1954). This great-grandson of Owa Bilaro, Peter Fariogun Fajemsin laid the foundation for the family's legacy. During his lifetime, he devoted himself to education, community development, and assisting with further developments of the established schools of the time that: merged Western knowledge with traditional Yoruba teachings.
His selfless dedication inspired a renaissance in Ilesa (epicentre of Ijeshaland) transforming the city into a regional hub for learning. This legacy continues through his descendants, who have consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to Ijeshaland’s growth. The Fajemsin Family's authenticity shines through, with a legacy built on substance and service rather than pomp and circumstance.
In a world where "not all that glitters is gold," the Fajemsin Family's dedication to the welfare of Ijeshaland remains unwavering.
Building on Peter Fariogun Fajemsin's foundation, the second generation of Fajemsin patriarchs left lasting impacts on Ilesa. Notably, Pa Christopher Adeyeye Fajemsin and Pa Dr. John Adesanya Fajemsin; both held esteemed and exemplary Lojaships, honing their governance skills; they served as Loja of Oko Ago and Loja of Itagunmodi until their passing.
Other notable Fajemsin family members include Pa Emmanuel Adeseitan Fajemsin, who spearheaded infrastructure development as Councillor and chairman of Ijesa Southern District Council. He also played a crucial role in protecting the Owa throne from the iniquitous excesses of political pugilists who emerged in the wake of post-colonial rule. Pa Reverend Rowland Fajemsin was a proficient town planner and Pa Joseph Adeniji Fajemsin also made significant contributions to the community in various capacities.
Today, the Fajemsin Family's commitment to Ilesa and Ijeshaland remains strong. As they aspire to lead the large county-like sprawl of many towns. They pledge to honor their ancestors' legacy, fostering social and economic growth, education, and cultural preservation. They recognize the challenges facing modern Ilesa and Ijeshaland and are equipped to navigate them, leveraging their expertise to drive progress.
The Fajemisin Family's ascension to the throne, would mark a new era of collaborative leadership; balancing tradition with innovation. Their legacy is worth reclaiming by Ijeshaland, and impact will undoubtedly endure for many generations to come.
