The University of Ilesa, Osun State, Nigeria has said that in the face of the unabated and uncontrollable activities of artisanal miners on its campus, stakeholders must ensure that the university is not pushed into extinction.
Speaking at the annual Community Engagement on Mining in Ijesaland by the Ijesaland Mineral Resources Development Forum (IMRDF) on Thursday October 31 at Ilesa Social Elite Club House, Isokun, Ilesa, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Taiwo Asaolu who was represented by Dr. Posi Aduroja , explained, “The university's expansion is becoming very difficult and if steps are not taken the continuous existence of the University may be threatened.
"Now we are at the point of becoming afraid as the security agents could not do anything to stop them as they are incapacitated.
"Our plea is that they should leave the environment completely.
"The lives of our students in their hostels are being threatened, as at now, to erect new buildings at the staff quarters is becoming very difficult because most of the land are already being devastated.
"Do anything to assist us, this security people cannot do anything anymore as this miners come in the night with sophisticated weapons"
